Sydney Contemporary 2025
Gretchen Albrecht, Matt Arbuckle, Jude Rae, Peata Larkin, Helen Calder, Marie Le Lievre, Elizabeth Thomson

10 - 14 September 2025

Two Rooms will be presenting a selection of work by seven artists, two being new to the gallery, Marie Le Lievre and Helen Calder. Both have shown previously at Sydney Contemporary and both have returned to push the boundaries of conventional painting, with an emphasis on materiality and new spatial approaches. Established artists Gretchen Albrecht, Jude Rae and Elizabeth Thomson will be exhibiting new work alongside painters Matt Arbuckle and Peata Larkin.

Helen Calder presents Stacks (2025) as part of Installations at Sydney Contemporary, curated by José Da Silva. Installations presents major artworks beyond the gallery booth, engaging with the distinctive architecture and atmosphere of Carriageworks. Calder has created three-dimensional paintings that blur the line between painting and sculpture, offering a direct engagement with the materiality of paint – its weight, tactility, malleability, and colour. Her poured and pigmented ‘paint skins’ – freed from traditional stretchers – are folded, draped, and suspended in space, revealing fronts, backs, and edges saturated with layered colour.
