The tactile qualities of Calder’s materials—specifically the softness, pliability, and weight of the paint—are central to the viewer’s experience. These characteristics remain visible regardless of whether the paint is draped over steel bars, stools, tables, frames or hung and loosely gathered on cords. The selection of support is crucial, as it transforms the way each work is perceived and engaged with. In the context of her studio, Calder frequently repositions the paint forms onto different supports. In this exhibition Stacked Red comprises five forms originally exhibited in 2014, suspended and draped in a similar way to those in Fifteen Metres of Red Standing.
